Lae and Madang
In the north western corner of Huon Gulf and at the mouth of the Markham River, lies Lae which serves the eastern highland region of Papua New Guinea.
Islands to port and starboard and a close passage past the white-washed Coast Watchers' war memorial make the approach to Madang as beautiful as the surrounds of the port. Indeed, the typical tropical beauty around the town - dense vegetation, snowwhite beaches and clear turquoise water - will make lasting impressions of this splendid place. While in port you will be able to wander through the local markets where all kinds of produce and crafts are on sale. Delightful seafood restaurants offer lobsters and a variety of fish caught along the reef early each morning by young boys from their dugout canoes. A short trip to Pig Island off Madang is another of those beautiful tropical experiences awaiting you, especially if you wish to explore the underwater world amidst the rich coral. Yet another corner of paradise!
